Refugees United in Uganda, Feb. 2011 – Part 1
Refugees United in Uganda, Feb. 2011 – Part 1 In early Feb 2011, David and I headed to Kampala, Uganda, with Rick Gershon from MediaStorm. Also joining us was RU ambassador Mads Mikkelsen. We set out to further document the life of Refugees United and our mobile refugee family tracing tools; a visual journey we had begun a few months prior at MediaStorm’s Brooklyn studios. MediaStorm, a brilliant multimedia production company, are great at finding, and telling, the compelling story. In our case, we decided to speak in-depth with some of the refugees searching for missing family through Refugees United,…

Juba, South Sudan, Feb. 8th 2011
Pushing 43 degrees Celsius, this is actually the “cold” season for South Sudan. Hairdryer hot is the first word that comes to my mind.  Arriving in Juba on Feb. 7th for a short stay was a privileged invite to the birth of a new nation; exciting, with a dash of Bambi-legs. It shone clearly from the eyes of most officials who’d been official less than a few hours: “What the hell am I doing here?” Refugees United was in town with UNHCR Uganda, paying a visit to the UNHCR Sudan field office in Juba to discuss family tracing through Refugees…

Last day of meetings in Dar
Just finished our final meeting with Asylum Access, and we were really impressed with how much knowledge they’ve managed to build up in the short time they’ve been here. They’ve only been in Tanzania for about a year and in Dar for no more than a month. Obviously though, they’ve spent their time effectively. Coincidently, as the new kid on the block, they’re sharing office space with the oldest and most experienced of them all – the TCRS, which we met with Tuesday. As they are new in the city, and still under establishment, we’ll be looking into whether we…

Day 3 in Dar
This afternoon we finally got our intact suitcases, so now we have clean clothes for a week, but only one more day to wear it in. Almost makes us (or at least Helene) consider staying a bit longer…. Besides of our luck with the suitcases, we’ve had another couple of interesting meetings. We started the day out by meeting with the International Recue Committee (IRC). We learned how they’ve been operating in the country since 1993, while advocating on behalf of the most vulnerable groups of the refugee populations as well as assisting them in getting medical assistance and access…

Internal Displacement at Record High in 2009
According to the report Internal Displacement: Global Overview of Trends and Developments in 2009 by NRC’s Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, the number of IDPs continued to rise last year, predominantly due to longrunning internal conflicts.  “The massive population movements and shocking violence are a sad reminder of the price that civilians pay in armed conflict,” said Elisabeth Rasmusson. “Millions of people were newly displaced by conflicts in which combatants did not meet their obligations to protect civilians.”  6.8 million people were newly displaced in 2009, many more than in previous years, the report shows. While there were no new conflicts, the…
