A Visit to REFUNITE’s Lab in Dadaab Refugee Camp
August 27, 2014 — In mid-July, REFUNITE’s Africa Director Nishant Shah visited Dadaab Refugee Camp in Kenya. Home to more than 330,000  Somali refugees, Dadaab is a critical location for REFUNITE’s Outreach Volunteers, who register separated families through mobile phones. On his visit, Nishant met with the outreach team, as well as community leaders in the camp and representatives from REFUNITE partner, the Kenya Red Cross Society. Descending through the thin layer of clouds, the arid landscape of Dadaab appears below, pockmarked by the blue tents of the UNHCR hosting weary refugees. As we approach the short landing strip, the warm winds rising rattle the little propeller plane, dipping the wings on either side. Having left behind chilly Nairobi at 6 am, the warmth of Dadaab is a brief respite for my freezing toes, though soon, I, along with everyone else, wish for cooler weather – even during this winter “chill.” I disembark with a flurry of butterflies and head off to greet our partners, the wonderful…

Nairobi: Commission allocates 3 million euros for displaced Somali refugees in Kenyan refugee camps
  A tented section of Dadaab refugee camps The European Commission has allocated 3 million euros in humanitarian aid for programmes to support refugees in Kenya’s Dadaab camps. Around 267,0000 refugees are currently accommodated in Dadaab, which was designed for just 90,000 people. The refugees have fled Somalia due to the ongoing insecurity caused by two decades conflict.
