Christopher Mikkelsen, REFUNITE’s Co-founder and Co-CEO attends high-level meeting on the Syrian crisis.

This week, REFUNITE’s Co-founder and Co-CEO, Christopher Mikkelsen, is attending the Clinton Global Initiative’s conference on the Middle East and Africa. The conference takes place in Marrakech, Morocco. Mr. Mikkelsen will be participating in a forum titled “The Syrian Crisis: Investing in Refugees and Host Communities” together with experts and executives from the public, private and nonprofit sector. As part of the high-level discussions, they will discuss infrastructure investment, economic opportunities for refugees and their host countries, and how to leverage mobile networks, green technologies, and other innovations to better the lives of Syrian families.

In 2014, REFUNITE, together with leading mobile operators in the Middle East, launched a special mobile initiative aimed at Syrian families. REFUNITE’s Syria Response is supported by Ericsson, Zain Group, Asiacell and Avea. A series of family reconnection services have been launched in Jordan, Iraq and Turkey. The services include free help lines, large-scale SMS campaigns and a special family reconnection app; all with the goal of making it easier for families to search, connect and communicate with their missing loved ones.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee (UNHCR), an estimated 9 million Syrians have fled their homes since the outbreak of the civil war in March 2011, with over 4 million of them seeking refuge in neighbouring Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. This is considered the largest humanitarian crises in recent history.
