Refugees United and FilmAid to Screen Films in Refugee Camps Across Africa
Family separation represents an often-overlooked emotional burden facing the estimated 45 million people forcibly displaced by war, conflict, or disaster. In addition to the homes they have been forced to leave behind, a staggering percentage lose contact with friends and family in their scramble for food, shelter and safety. Refugees United and FilmAid have partnered to produce a new TV campaign for separated refugee families. Refugees United, Google+, Mashable, Google Kenya and UNHCR to partner on #GivingTuesday.
On Tuesday, December 3, 2013 10AM EST, Refugees United is joining Google+, Mashable and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) as one of the partners in the first ever live “Hangout-a-thon,” a 12-hour event on Google+ that will feature content from a variety of nonprofits, celebrities, and socially responsible businesses. The initiative is part of #GivingTuesday, a nationwide effort in the US to inspire people to give back to their communities and to raise awareness about nonprofit organizations that work to give back everyday. Going Low-Tech to Achieve High-Tech Solutions

iHub innovation tech hub in Nairobi!
Nairobi, Kenya—On 17th October 2013, more than 100 techies and aid workers gathered to discuss and share insights on technological innovations in the humanitarian field, marking the launch of the 2013 World Disasters Report. Held at the iHub, an innovation hub for Nairobi’s tech community, organizations such as the Kenya Red Cross, the UN World Food Programme and BBC Media came together to showcase their use of technology in humanitarian action. Silicon Valley Can Learn From Africa’s Techies
David Mikkelsen, co-founder of Refugees United, said last week that developers and innovators in Silicon Valley can learn a lot from Africa’s fast-growing startup scene and it’s use of simple mobile solutions with a big impact. Speaking last week at the Digital Leaders event in Silicon Valley, Mr. Mikkelsen made the case that developers and entrepreneurs in Africa are at the forefront of the mobile revolution, especially when it comes to developing groundbreaking mobile solutions with limited resources and investments.
